T5018 construction reporting deadline: calendar year or fiscal period?

Confirm the construction reporting requirement and chosen T5018 period before using a June deadline, and prepare subcontractor records early.

Confirm the reporting requirement and period

CRA describes T5018 reporting for qualifying construction payments to subcontractors. It is not a rule for every business that hires a contractor. Review the construction-activity and payment conditions with the preparer before enabling a reporting task.

The reporting period can be a calendar year or fiscal period. The filing deadline is six months after that chosen period ends. A calendar-year period ending December 31 ordinarily gives a June 30 filing date; a different period needs a different calculation and any applicable date adjustment.

Prepare the subcontractor record

  • Confirm the reporting period actually used for T5018.
  • Reconcile relevant contract payments against the books.
  • Review recipient information and reportable amounts with the preparer.
  • Agree who prepares and submits the information return.
  • Keep the submission acknowledgement and any follow-up.

Use the current CRA instructions for the applicable eligibility and amount calculations. An accounts-payable list is useful preparation, but it is not itself a completed information return.

Do not substitute another return's deadline

The T2 return, GST/HST reporting and T5018 can use different periods or filing schedules. Identify the period on each confirmation so that a completed tax-return task does not hide an outstanding construction-information return.

Understand the calendar’s current T5018 scope

Compliance Calendar currently displays calendar-year T5018 reporting and labels that limitation in the profile and calendar notes. It does not offer a separate fiscal-period selector for T5018. If you use a fiscal reporting period, verify and track that deadline separately rather than relying on the displayed June example. The product does not prepare or submit the return.

Common questions

Is every T5018 return due June 30?

No. That is the ordinary calendar-year example. Confirm the end of the chosen reporting period.

Does changing the corporate fiscal year-end change T5018 in this calendar?

No. The current T5018 entry uses calendar-year reporting; fiscal-period filers need a separate check.
