GST/HST

No sales this quarter: do I still need to file a GST/HST nil return?

A quiet reporting period does not automatically remove a GST/HST filing obligation. Check whether a nil return is appropriate and keep the receipt.

A quiet quarter is still a reporting period

CRA requires GST/HST registrants to file for each reporting period, including periods with no business transactions or income and periods with no net tax to remit. A return with nothing to report is commonly called a nil return.

Check the account status and the assigned reporting period. Do not remove the filing task merely because the sales report is empty. Closing an account also requires attention to its final return.

Review the books before choosing “nil”

No sales and nothing to report are not interchangeable. Purchase records, adjustments or other transactions may still need review. Ask your bookkeeper to determine the correct return rather than using “nil” as a shortcut for an unfinished reconciliation.

  • Confirm the start and end of the reporting period.
  • Review sales, purchases and adjustments for that period.
  • Resolve whether there is information to report or a refund to claim.
  • Submit through the appropriate filing method and retain the receipt.

What should you keep?

A dated preparation note can explain why the period looked inactive. Keep the actual filing confirmation as the completion evidence. A calendar checkbox alone is an internal record, not CRA acknowledgement.

Keep the recurring task visible

Leave GST/HST enabled in your business profile while the obligation remains active. In Compliance Calendar, use the checklist and notes to distinguish “review needed” from “return submitted.” If you believe filing requirements should change because the business is seasonal or has closed, resolve that with CRA or your adviser before changing your routine.

Common questions

Is a zero balance the same as no filing requirement?

No. A zero balance does not by itself remove the reporting obligation.

Should I mark the deadline filed after saving a draft?

Keep it open until you have evidence that the return was submitted.
