Payroll & slips

Paid your employees. Forgot the CRA remittance. What happens next?

Running payroll and sending source deductions to the CRA are separate tasks. Completing one does not complete the other.

3%–10%Standard late-remitting penalty rates

A delay measured in days

CRA lists standard penalty rates of 3% for 1–3 days late, 5% for 4–5 days, 7% for 6–7 days, and 10% beyond seven days or where nothing is remitted.

The $500 exemption generally limits the penalty to the portion above $500, unless the delay was knowing or grossly negligent. A second or subsequent assessed failure in the same calendar year can attract 20% when knowing conduct or gross negligence is involved. Interest can also accrue, compounded daily.

Already missed it?

Check your payroll account, confirm the period and amount, arrange remittance promptly, and retain payment evidence. Allow for your payment method's processing time. Review the remitter type CRA has assigned before setting the next reminder.
