Getting started
Missed a CRA deadline and cannot pay in full: what to check next
Separate the outstanding return from the unpaid balance, find the correct CRA account, and prepare for a payment-arrangement conversation.
Write down the account and reporting period
Start with the notice or the balance shown in the correct CRA account. Identify whether the issue is an unfiled return, an unpaid assessed balance, a missing payment or a combination. Gather the latest correspondence and any existing filing or payment receipts before asking someone to investigate.
A GST/HST return can be filed electronically even with an amount owing. Do not assume the filing task must wait until the entire balance can be paid. Discuss the correct return and next steps with the person preparing it.
Prepare for the payment conversation
CRA describes options to schedule payments through an online account or arrange payments by contacting the agency. If a collections officer has sent a letter, CRA directs you to contact that officer using the provided number. Eligibility and terms depend on your situation; this article does not promise an approved arrangement.
- Confirm the account, period and current balance.
- List payments already made and keep their references available.
- Prepare a realistic view of income, expenses and available funds.
- Ask how interest, future obligations and missed instalments will be handled.
- Keep the agreed details and follow-up dates if an arrangement is established.
Do not treat a reminder as a resolution
A note saying “call CRA” is a next action, not a filed return or an accepted payment arrangement. Keep the task open until the relevant action has evidence. If you receive new correspondence, review it rather than assuming an earlier conversation covered everything.
Rebuild the next cycle
Once the immediate issue is understood, check the next filing and payment dates. Use Compliance Calendar to organize the preparation work and confirmations. It cannot negotiate with CRA, waive penalties or guarantee relief. The aim is a clearer routine, with the appropriate professional involved where the facts need review.
Common questions
Does scheduling a bank payment automatically create a CRA agreement?
Do not assume it does. Confirm the arrangement and its terms through the applicable CRA process.
Can the calendar remove a penalty?
No. It records your workflow; only the relevant authority can decide an assessment or relief request.
