BC PST return deadline: when to file, pay and report a nil period

Check your eTaxBC reporting period, understand the ordinary PST due date, and keep GST/HST and BC PST completion records separate.

Read the reporting period before choosing a date

The BC return guide states that the return and payment are due by the last day of the month following the reporting period. Check the actual period in eTaxBC; a business reporting quarterly should not automatically copy a calendar-quarter schedule from another company.

The province also requires a return from a registered business even where there were no taxable sales or leases and no PST to self-assess. In eTaxBC, a nil return is a reporting action, not a reason to delete the deadline.

Prepare the period review

  • Confirm the period start, period end and PST account.
  • Reconcile the sales and lease records requested for that period.
  • Review purchases for any PST that needs to be self-assessed.
  • Ask the preparer to resolve missing information before submission.
  • Keep the filing acknowledgement and check payment independently.

This checklist does not decide which sale is taxable or which exemption applies. Use the province's guidance and your adviser for those questions. No sales alone does not prove every line of a return is zero.

Keep PST separate from GST/HST

Submitting a GST/HST return does not submit the BC PST return. Label confirmations with the tax type and period, especially when the same person handles both. If a payment is missing, investigate the relevant account instead of assuming it was combined with another tax.

Use the matching calendar settings

Select BC and the verified PST frequency in Compliance Calendar. The builder asks for a month in which a PST period ends; compare the generated periods with eTaxBC. Use the checklist for preparation and record filing and payment once each is complete. If your account changes frequency, update the profile and review the next dates.

Common questions

Does a quiet month remove the PST filing task?

Generally no for a registered business. Review and file the appropriate return, including a nil return where applicable.

Does the calendar calculate the PST amount?

No. It organizes dates, preparation and completion records; the return calculation remains a separate task.
