Paid CRA but the balance still shows owing: check the account and payment period

Trace a CRA payment using the account, period and bank reference, and understand why a transfer instruction is different from a confirmed account credit.

Start with the payment evidence

Gather the payment date, amount, bank reference and intended tax account. Compare them with the current CRA account record. CRA's confirmation guidance explains how to review payments and address payments that went to the wrong place within an account.

Check the published processing information for the payment method before assuming that a bank instruction has already appeared in the CRA record. This article does not promise a particular posting time or determine whether a payment was legally on time.

Check the program account and period

  • Match the business number and program account.
  • Confirm the reporting period or taxation year selected.
  • Review whether the payment was posted against another balance.
  • Keep the original payment reference available for an enquiry.
  • Save evidence of any approved transfer or correction.

CRA describes self-service correction and transfer options for eligible situations, with further enquiry options where needed. Follow the process that fits the account rather than treating a note in a spreadsheet as a completed transfer.

Keep unresolved differences visible

If the payment and balance do not reconcile, agree who will investigate with CRA or the financial institution. Keep relevant notices and follow-up dates together. The appropriate response depends on the facts; an apparent discrepancy should not be silently marked resolved.

Record payment with a useful reference

Compliance Calendar lets you keep a payment confirmation and notes beside the deadline, separately from filing progress. Use the note to distinguish a transfer initiated from a payment confirmed against the expected account. The product does not connect to your bank, move funds between CRA accounts or certify the posting date.

Common questions

Does a bank receipt prove the correct tax period was credited?

It is useful evidence of the payment instruction. Compare it with the CRA account and the intended period before closing an unresolved discrepancy.

Can Compliance Calendar transfer a misapplied payment?

No. Use the applicable CRA process; the calendar records your follow-up and confirmation.
