CRA deadline on a weekend or holiday: why your calendar date moved

Understand a moved CRA GST/HST date, distinguish the legal due date from your preparation date, and check filing and payment evidence separately.

Start with the tax and authority

CRA's GST/HST guidance applies a next-business-day rule when the due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or recognized public holiday. That does not mean every provincial registry, tax or payment process uses identical rules. Open the official source for the actual task instead of applying a generic weekend assumption.

The date an account notice shows, the date a bank transfer is initiated and the date a payment is recognized can answer different questions. If those dates differ, check the authority's rules and payment-method instructions.

What “moved from” means in the calendar

Compliance Calendar can display the adjusted date together with the original date. For example, a monthly or quarterly return may have a month-end date that lands on a weekend. The displayed adjustment explains the change; it is not a new extension issued by the calendar.

  • Check the business profile and reporting period.
  • Open the official source attached to the deadline.
  • Compare the original date, adjusted date and relevant account notice.
  • Review the payment method before leaving a transfer to the last day.

Keep an earlier working date

A statutory adjustment should not be the whole preparation plan. Agree when the books will be ready, when an accountant will review the amount and who will authorize payment. Use those internal milestones to avoid discovering a missing receipt on the final morning.

Complete the actions, then record the evidence

Save the filing acknowledgement once submitted. Record payment separately and retain its reference. Neither the adjusted date nor an imported calendar event proves that either action occurred. If an account-specific notice differs from the calendar, investigate before relying on the entry, and keep the unresolved question visible in your notes.

Common questions

Does a moved date mean the calendar granted an extension?

No. The calendar applies the selected rule; the authority determines the deadline.

Can I use this rule for every registry filing?

No. Verify the rule for that authority and the particular filing.
