Passed CA$30,000 in sales: did you miss the GST/HST registration point?
Review the ordinary small-supplier tests, the timing of the taxable supply and the records needed to discuss a possible late GST/HST registration.
Identify the applicable registration test
CRA's registration guidance distinguishes exceeding the ordinary CA$30,000 threshold in one calendar quarter from exceeding it over consecutive quarters. In the single-quarter case, the supply that takes the business over the threshold can itself be the point at which charging is required. The other test has different timing.
Review the applicable revenue definition, associated businesses and exclusions in the official guidance. Some businesses and activities have different or mandatory rules. A simple bank-deposit total or year-end profit figure does not establish the correct result.
Gather the sales timeline
- Organize invoices and relevant taxable supplies by date.
- Review the quarter totals and any associated businesses.
- Identify when the applicable threshold may have been crossed.
- Check whether an account already exists and its effective date.
- Ask the preparer to confirm registration and charging obligations.
CRA describes registration within 29 days of the effective date for the ordinary cases in its guidance. If the business may already be late, verify the actual facts promptly rather than treating the next annual return appointment as the registration date.
Resolve the account setup before relying on a recurring schedule
Confirm the effective registration date and assigned reporting period through the proper CRA process. Ask how any earlier transactions or returns need to be handled. This article does not calculate a retroactive amount or determine the correct treatment of a particular sale.
Then build the filing routine
Once the obligation and frequency are verified, set up the GST/HST profile in Compliance Calendar and compare the dates with the account. The calendar does not monitor sales, register the business or automatically detect a threshold crossing. It helps organize the recurring preparation, filing and payment records after those questions are resolved.
Common questions
Is CA$30,000 of profit the ordinary threshold?
No. Review CRA’s taxable-supplies revenue tests and the applicable inclusions and exclusions.
Does the calendar tell me when my sales cross the threshold?
No. It does not read sales records or determine registration eligibility.
