New corporation’s first year: no instalments does not mean no tax payment
Understand the ordinary first-year corporate instalment rule and why the balance payment, T2 filing and second-year instalments need separate planning.
Separate the first-year balance from instalments
CRA's corporation instalment guide describes the ordinary rule for new corporations: instalments generally begin in the second year of operation, while first-year tax remains payable by that year's balance-due day. The guide identifies exceptions and special situations, so confirm the rule with the preparer instead of assuming every newly created corporation qualifies.
A corporation formed through an amalgamation, for example, needs a review of the predecessor rules. The calendar does not determine whether a transaction makes the business a new corporation for a particular tax provision.
Plan the transition before the first return is finished
CRA notes that second-year instalments may start before the first-year balance is paid or the first return is filed. Ask the accountant to identify those overlapping obligations early, particularly where bookkeeping is still being finalized.
- Confirm the incorporation date and actual first taxation year.
- Agree on the first-year balance payment deadline.
- Identify the separate T2 filing date.
- Review second-year instalment eligibility, frequency and amount.
- Check the tax year and account used for each payment.
Keep cash planning and filing evidence distinct
An estimate or a transfer instruction is not a filed T2 acknowledgement. Keep payment references, submission evidence and unresolved questions in a form that makes each obligation clear to the owner and preparer.
Use calendar settings only after eligibility is checked
Select the verified year-end and applicable instalment setting in Compliance Calendar. The builder does not infer first-year instalment eligibility from an incorporation date. Review the profile as the business enters its next year, and confirm unusual periods and special situations with the adviser or CRA before relying on generated dates.
Common questions
Can the second-year instalments begin before the first return is filed?
Yes, CRA notes that the schedules can overlap. Ask the preparer to identify the actual obligations.
Will the builder decide that my company is exempt from first-year instalments?
No. Verify the requirement and select the matching profile setting.
