Payroll & slips

No employees paid this period: do you need to report a nil payroll remittance?

Check your active CRA payroll account when there is no remittance, retain the nil-report confirmation and keep annual slips as a separate task.

Check the payroll account and the period

CRA provides reporting options for nil remittances, including situations with no employees or seasonal workers. Confirm what applies to the active account and the period in question. No bank transfer is not the same as a completed nil report.

If pay was processed or deductions remain unresolved, have the payroll records reviewed before choosing a nil response. A quiet month does not establish that nothing needs to be reported or paid.

Keep the confirmation

  • Verify the business payroll account.
  • Confirm the period and reason no remittance is due.
  • Use the appropriate CRA nil-reporting method.
  • Retain the confirmation and any relevant follow-up.
  • Review the next expected payroll period.

Where a reporting system provides a confirmation, keep it as evidence. An incomplete call or a saved draft should not be treated as a successful submission.

Review closure and annual slips separately

A temporary stop in payroll and a permanent account closure are different situations. Check the appropriate process when the business stops employing people. Review any remaining annual information-return obligations with the payroll preparer rather than assuming a nil period removes them.

How to record the work in the calendar

Keep the actual remitter classification in the profile while reviewing the account's requirements. Use the relevant task's notes for the nil-report confirmation and any unresolved question. Compliance Calendar does not submit a nil report or determine that a payroll account can be closed; the official account and payroll records control those decisions.
